Jil Guyon is an American multidisciplinary artist who works between performance, visual art, and digital media. Her performance-videos have screened at theaters, cinemas, museums, galleries, and concert halls worldwide, including Lincoln Center’s “Dance on Camera Festival,” “Cinedanse Quebec,” “Women and Fashion FilmFEST” at Symphony Space (Best Experimental Film), “San Francisco Dance Film Festival,” and “NOW New Music Festival,” among others. As part of the “Toronto Urban Film Festival” curated by filmmaker Guy Maddin, her performance-video, Widow, was seen throughout the Toronto mass transit system, averaging over two million riders/viewers per day. Guyon’s interdisciplinary performances have been presented at the Queens Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and diverse venues throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. Her critically acclaimed dance-theater piece, At the Borders of Eternity, based on The Diary of Anne Frank, starred celebrated German actress Elfriede Irrall, and was featured on ORF television (Austria). It is part of the collection of the Kulturarchiv Wien, and was the first theatrical work granted exclusive use of the diary.
As a performer, Guyon appeared alongside Kiki Smith and Alvin Curran in Joan Jonas’s Variations on a Scene at “The Wave Hill Dancescape” in Riverdale, NY. She is also a contributing artist with Noemie Lafrance/Sens Production; performing in Agora II at the McCarren Park pool, Brooklyn, and in the film Eyes, Nose, Mouth directed by Noemie Lafrance and Patrick Daughters. Most recently she was one of the core performers in Amanda Palmer’s (Dresden Dolls) music video, Mr. Weinstein Will See You Now. She also dances with the satirical butoh group “Celeste Hastings and The Butoh Rockettes.”
Jil Guyon is a Lumiere prize (Canada) nominee, and a recipient of the IndieFEST and Global Shorts Awards for Excellence in experimental film, an Accolade Award in experimental film, the Magistrat der Stadt Wien Award (Austria), Harriet E. Eagleston Fellowship, and an Artward Bound Residency at White Oak Plantation, funded by the Howard Gilman Foundation. Teaching credits include St. John’s University, Parson’s School of Art of Design, and Hampshire College-Amherst. Guyon was previously Curatorial Associate at Neue Galerie New York where she designed and wrote the “Schiele and Contemporary Culture” section of the Egon Schiele catalogue raisonné that accompanied the exhibition. She holds an MFA in painting and art history from Hunter College where she studied with Rosalind Krauss and Robert Morris.
